Anacapa Society’s Very First Grant Proposal is Approved!

Less than a year after its founding, the Anacapa Society has received its first externally-funded grant. The National Science Foundation has awarded grant PHY-0758149 for the purposes of holding a four-day workshop on “Advancing Theoretical Physics Research at Primarily Undergraduate Institutions.”

The workshop is designed to help theorists at undergraduate institutions maintain a high level of research activity at significant career moments — when newly hired, when approaching tenure, and when changing research areas at mid-career. There will also be significant opportunities for research seminars and research discussions.

The proposal was prepared by Board members Herb Bernstein of Hampshire College and Don Spector of Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Because the proposal was submitted in September 2007, before our hosting arrangement with Amherst College, the grant will be administered through nearby Hampshire College. The workshop will be held sometime in the
coming year — stay tuned for details!
